54-Day Rosary Novena
Rosary Novena Starts:  Feast day of The Immaculate Heart of Mary (8th June)        Ends:   Feast day of St. Ignatius Loyola (31st July)
EWTN (Ireland) want to make an urgent appeal for prayer at the present time. As you know, the Irish Government is on course to legislate for abortion. If this legislation is passed it will surely be a sad, sad day for Ireland. Abortion is a terrible evil, and the intentional killing of our unborn children must never be allowed. Yet, in recent months the Irish Government have moved closer to legalising abortion here. It’s on this basis that I make this urgent prayer appeal to you. It is imperative that we increase our pro-life and prayer efforts to protect all unborn children and their mothers from this evil. I believe that Our Lord Jesus and Our Blessed Lady look to every one of us for prayer so that this travesty is not foisted upon our nation.
When Blessed Mother Teresa visited Knock Shrine in June 1993 and prayed the Rosary for life, she gave some reflections concerning Ireland and abortion. These statements are very relevant to us today. Samples of Blessed Mother Teresa’s statements are as follows:

For this purpose we in EWTN Ireland will begin praying a 54-day Rosary Novena for the protection of unborn babies and their mothers. It will commence on the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Saturday 8th June) and end on the Feast of St. Ignatius Loyola (Wednesday 31st July). WILL YOU PRAY WITH US? This abortion legislation is a huge threat to Ireland and we need to implore God with all our hearts.

Our Lady of The Holy Rosary

Remember, Sister Lucia of Fatima said: The Most Holy Virgin, in these last times in which we live, has given new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, temporal or especially spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families... or of the religious communities, or even of the life of peoples and nations that cannot be solved by the Rosary.”

About this Devotion:

To complete one Novena, a person must say the Rosary for 9 days. Three Novenas of 9 days must be said to obtain the favour. Then, three more Novenas must be said in Thanksgiving. In total, there must be 27 days of Rosary prayers to obtain the favour and 27 days of Rosary prayers in Thanksgiving. This makes a total of 54 days.

Whether the prayer intention has been received or not after the first 27 days (3 Novenas), the person must still say the 3 Rosary prayer Novenas (27 days) in Thanksgiving. From day to day, the meditations are in accordance with the guideline followed in the Catholic Church. These included the Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries, the Glorious Mysteries and the Mysteries of Light.

Other points to guide you:

As well as the aforementioned points, here are some others to guide you when praying this Novena:

1. You don’t have to pray an extra Rosary, but include the protection of unborn children and their mothers in the rosary you already say, ie. pray the Rosary you normally would and mention this petition each day.

2. If possible, offer these intentions at daily Mass.

3. Join us at any time: if you are reading this after the novena has begun, then please feel free to begin the 54-day Rosary Novena at any time.

History of the 54-Day Rosary Novena

Church history reveals to us that on March 3, 1884, Our Lady of Pompeii appeared before the gravely ill daughter of an Italian military officer. Through her, Our Lady gave the world the miraculous devotion of the 54 days Rosary Novena. For over a year, Fortuna Agrelli had been in great distress even near death. So serious was her illness that her case had been given-up as hopeless by the most celebrated physicians. In desperation, on February 16 th, the afflicted girl and her family began a novena of Rosaries. One evening two weeks later, the Queen of the Holy Rosary appeared to Fortuna. Sitting upon a high throne, surrounded by luminous figures, Our Lady was holding the Divine Child on her lap and a Rosary in her hand. Both were arrayed in golden garments and were accompanied by Sts. Dominic and Catherine of Siena.

Our Lady said, "Child, your faith has pleased me. Whoever desires to obtain favours from me should make three Novenas of the prayers of the Rosary, and three Novenas in thanksgiving."

Obedient to Our Lady's invitation, Fortuna and her family completed the six novenas whereupon the young girl was restored to perfect health and her family showered with many blessings.
